A Broken Clock Is Right Twice A Day

The Red Quest wrote a great article a couple of days ago, it’s titled, The Most Stridently Asserted Opinions Will Disappear Down The Memory Hole. It’s a great read and it got me to thinking…

I wrote about Time Wasters a few weeks ago and in it I mentioned that one of my huge “battles” is trying to ascertain if someone is saying something that I simply disagree with, but otherwise they have some valid information and they make valid points, or are they shitting the bed more often than not, i.e. they are time wasters. Red Quest, whether he knows it or not, gave me another piece of the puzzle that I have been trying to solve, and for that I thank you, Red Quest.

In his article, like the title, he mentions that the most stridently asserted opinions will disappear down the memory hole. In our age of ADHD technology, it’s real easy to say something with absolute conviction, knowing that you have God and “ScIeNcE!” on your side, get your likes, your shares, and your retweets, and then not even three months later, have your assertion proven false, and yet you’re able to move right on to the next absolute conviction without blinking an eye, and no one calls you out on it because that proven false assertion has already been forgotten. This is what I call “Shitting The Bed.”

Red Quest asks the question: “What are they (“they” being whoever is running their mouth at the moment) stridently asserting today? Should we believe it? Why?”

He goes on: “I haven’t seen any of the voice who were confidently and wrongly asserting this thing or that thing, talk about how they were wrong, why they were wrong, and most importantly what will change in the future.” (Emphasis mine.)

Red Quest continues: “Internet memories are very short, even shorter than tweets. When you see people, or a group of people, be wildly wrong, that should affect how you think of them in other topics. Someone can be right in one domain and wrong in another, but being totally wrong in one domain should make us question what’s happening in others.” (Emphasis mine.)

Red Quest goes on to talk about the how’s, the what’s, and the why’s of what is going on here and I’ll leave it to you the Reader to continue down his rabbit hole if you so desire. I highly encourage you to do so, it’s a thought provoking read and it definitely made me think.

When I see someone shit the bed, especially if they do it more than a couple of times, and then they move on like nothing happened, and they don’t back up and say something like, “Ooops! My bad! I fucked the dog on this one!” and then hopefully they do more due diligence on the next go around, I have to consider them Time Wasters.

An occasional shitting of the bed is excusable because we are all humans, make mistakes, and are prone to errors. We all have egos to protect, and I get that. But to continue doubling down on something that is clearly in error, or to move on to something else with that same bravado and certainty is going to make me stop, raise an eyebrow, and question what is going on here. I’m going to start looking for patterns and if and when I find them, I’m going to act accordingly.

If a guy shits the bed on one subject one time, no harm, no foul. If he continues shitting the bed on the same subject, or better yet, he moves on to another subject entirely and shits the bed there, it’s time to question why you are listening to this guy.

A broken clock is right twice a day.

Sometimes someone gets lucky and guesses something right. Sometimes they know something about a certain topic and they are correct, that doesn’t mean they know their ass from their elbow when it comes to some other topic.

Sure he got something right, but even a broken clock is right twice a day.

This is the obstacle I encounter now. Not just learning new things, but trying to ascertain if the individual or group or entity is shitting the bed. Are they broken clocks? Or do they actually know what they are talking about?

I don’t have an easy answer because there are no easy answers. The only thing that I have found that has worked for me is making a conscious effort to remember, to not let stridently asserted opinions disappear down the memory hole. And while the internet never forgets, we do. It’s upon us to remember, to do the digging, to do the research, and in my opinion, call out and remind those that shit the bed, that they indeed, did shit the bed. Not as a punishment or shaming tactic, because they most likely aren’t going to listen to what you are saying anyways, but to serve as a warning to others who happen to go down that rabbit hole that you ventured into.

It is upon us to figure out who are Time Wasters and who are not.

Time Wasters

I’ve been active on Twitter and other forms of social media in a “serious capacity” for over two years now. I have a love/hate relationship when it comes to Twitter. On one hand, it’s where I’ve met some seriously incredible people. Smart, funny, knowledgeable, you name it. It also happens to be my best medium for putting my “message” out there. This blog, at least at the time of this writing, has only about 120 or so followers. I’ve been writing on here since October of 2016. I’ve got over 2000 followers on Twitter. Nothing to brag about and I’m honestly not trying to cultivate followers, I just want my message to be heard. Twitter is where it is at for me, at least for the time being.

That being said, the “hate” part of Twitter for me is the buffoonery and absolute stupidity that I see on a day to day basis. Guys LARPing about “saving the west,” “semen retention,” “whamen bad,” “orange man bad,” “degeneracy (whatever that means) bad.”

I came on to Twitter originally to learn, and learn I have. My more immediate goals with that platform is to connect with people and develop real life relationships with those people. I’ve succeeded so far. The part that I worry about occasionally is that I may in fact be creating an echo chamber for myself.

I’m all for intelligent conversations and discourse. I’m all for being able to agree to disagree. There are plenty of people that I follow that I don’t agree with them on everything. At least when we have a disagreement, it is civil and we still respect one another. No name calling and flipping out needed.

When I go to learn something, I start with what I don’t know and I “chunk down” until I can get to the most basic components of whatever it is that I’m trying to learn. Once I’ve figured out those basic components I tend to “chunk up” to a more broad picture that involves a lot more context and nuance. For me, that’s where I get to apply whatever it is that I have learned and put it to use.

At the highest and most useless “level,” there are people on Twitter.

The next level down, for me, is Time Wasters and Everybody Else. You can continue to “chunk down” if you want, I know I did, at least awhile ago, but now I’m good with this particular category.

I don’t care what your political bent is. I don’t care what religion you follow. I don’t care what you identify as. I don’t care about your sex or your gender, or anything else of that nature.

What I care about is: Are you a Time Waster? Are you going to waste my time with stupid shit? Are you saying stupid shit on the internet? Are you inviting me to join your circle jerk or are you saying something of substance that I might find useful, even if I disagree with it or you?

Can you teach me something about making YouTube videos? Can you show me something on a musical instrument? Can you paint or draw? Do you know how to write? Are you good with women? Or are you going to tell me that I shouldn’t be getting laid because I’m short? Are you going to give me worthless information like, “Just take her to the dance, man. And wear shoes! Not sneakers!”

Are you going to talk to me about giving yourself an enema and how you’re betting serious money on an election? Are you going to talk about “spirit cooking” and the illuminati? Are you going to spout off about how the Mormon’s and Islam is going to save the west?

Are you going to start off your theory, argument, thesis, diatribe, or rant with “As a Real Man” and hope that your weak statement can be bolstered by guilt and shame?

If so, that’s okay. You are a Time Waster. You are wasting my time. My time is my most precious commodity. I have less going forward than I do behind me. It’s the one commodity that I can’t get more of and I can’t get back any that I have spent or lost. In many ways, it’s actually finite because at some point in the future I’m going to stop breathing and I’ll be dead.

I don’t mind shit posting. Hell, I do that the most on Twitter. Twitter is where I go to relax if I can. Twitter is where I can “let my hair down” and just “hang out.” Twitter is my bar at the moment. It’s where I go to have a few drinks and talk shit with my friends. It’s not where I go to have my time wasted. It’s not where I go to get lectures from 24 year old’s on “How To Be An Alpha Male.” Dude, shut the fuck up and sit down, you’re giving me a headache.

It’s not where I go to learn about honor and virtue. Those things mean different things to everybody who encounters them. It’s not where I go to learn about religion and which one is supposedly the best. I don’t give a fuck.

I go to learn new skills not how to be a better LARPer.

When I get on Twitter my day consists of reading my DM’s, scrolling my time line, automatically muting “promoted tweets” aka ads (because fuck those) replying to people that I feel like replying to, writing an occasional tweet, and then muting time wasters. Why mute instead of block? Because fuck them, that’s why. I don’t need them knowing I blocked them so that they can parade it around to their fellow idiots. The only people I block is my ex-wife and those that are a real special kind of stupid. So if I have blocked you on Twitter, odds are pretty good you are not my ex-wife. Unless you are.

Now this isn’t hard science backed up by sources and facts, but in my experience I will say that at least 70% of people on Twitter are time wasters. The other 30% is everybody else and so I’m very careful about who and what I follow. If that builds me an echo chamber, then so be it I guess. At least it won’t waste my time.

Whatever you choose to do with your time is on you. Spend it on whatever you want. Waste it however you want if that’s what you want to do. Or realize that your time is finite and you can’t get more of it and you can’t get it back and so maybe put it to better use instead of guilt and shaming people into your point of view. If your assertion is really that strong it should be able to stand on its own without guilt or shame tactics. It should be able to speak for itself. Think before you tweet. Don’t be a time waster.

Or go ahead and be a time waster. I’ll figure out for myself really fast if you are and you’ll be screaming into the void from there on out.

Be Selective

man in grey hoodie standing on bridge over the expressway

Here’s something I learned awhile ago, and it has made my life so much better.

Be Selective.

Be selective about who you spend time with.

There are a lot of people out there that will just waste your fucking time. Apparently, they don’t have much or anything going on in their worlds, so they will want to be in yours and waste it.

I see it all the time in my side gig.

People come to me for advice about whatever it is that is going on in their world, I give them advice based on what I see, what I know, and what I’ve experienced. What do they usually do?

Nothing.

They shoot the shit, they waste my time. There is a positive here though. They pay me for my time. I don’t do that shit for free. Trust me on this one Men, if you are going to “waste” my time, you are going to pay me for it. I’m getting something out of it.

Be selective.

Choose who you spend your time with. If you aren’t getting anything of value out of it, don’t do it.

I get value out of these blog posts with you guys. I get value out of your feedback. I get value knowing that you are getting something from this, even if it’s only a laugh.

My circle of friends has gotten smaller and smaller over the years, that’s because my tolerance and patience for bullshit is damn near zero these days.

You know what though? My quality of life has just improved over and over. The friends that are still there? They are true treasures. I wouldn’t give them up for anything. I get massive value from them. I give them massive value in return.

The time wasters either are gone entirely, or they pay me for my time. Either way I win.

Be selective what you watch and what you read. You can waste a whole bunch of time there too. Not everything you watch has value. Not every book you read has gold.

Zero Tolerance. It’s been a buzz word in the corporate world for some time.

What if you extended that into your personal world?

Zero Tolerance for bullshit.

Zero Tolerance for time wasters.

Do that and see what happens.

You might surprise yourself.
